Statement on the Pan-Canadian Climate Framework on Clean Growth & Climate Change (released December 10, 2016)

Pollution Probe and Energy Exchange congratulate the Government of Canada and participating provincial and territorial governments on their leadership in achieving a historic national agreement to address the greenhouse gas emission reductions necessary to combat climate change. Our national and provincial leaders are also to be commended for the ambitious and comprehensive climate initiatives which are contained in the framework.

This Pan-Canadian Framework provides a pathway toward achieving Canada’s committed GHG reductions of 30% below 2005 levels by 2030, as outlined in the Paris Agreement and reinforced in last year’s Vancouver declaration.

In particular, Pollution Probe is pleased to note the specific measures to address emissions from the transportation and buildings sectors, which will include:

  • a new low carbon fuel standard and the development of more stringent emission standards for light and heavy-duty vehicles;
  • a strong commitment to accelerating the adoption of advanced technology vehicles; and
  • comprehensive initiatives to improve the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings.
    Pollution Probe will endeavour to continue our support of these efforts, including collaboration and input from our Pathways and Energy Exchange initiatives. We welcome the opportunity for continued consultation and feedback.
