Introducing “Turning the Tides”: New Initiative Empowers Emerging Leaders to Help Combat Plastic Pollution

Pollution Probe is excited to announce the launch of its new initiative, designed to empower young changemakers to tackle plastic pollution head-on within their communities. The Turning the Tides: Emerging Leaders Against Plastic Pollution initiative will provide opportunities for participants aged 18-23 to engage in educational sessions, workshops, field trips, and more, culminating in the development of their own project to tackle plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution has been described as one of the most devastating issues of our time. It is estimated that over 10 million kilograms of plastic enter the Great Lakes each year, threatening water quality, ecosystems, wildlife and human health.

“Our future community leaders are particularly eager to find sustainable solutions to address plastic pollution, one of our most complex and pressing environmental challenges,” says Melissa De Young, Vice President, Pollution Probe. “This initiative is aimed at arming them with the knowledge, skills, network and inspiration needed to action their creative and innovative solutions to make a real difference in their communities and beyond.”

Turning the Tides participants will have opportunities to collaborate with peers, industry leaders and community organizations, gain hands-on experience outside of the classroom, work with mentors, and develop innovative solutions to reduce, prevent, or remove plastic pollution from the environment. Selected projects will receive support for implementation in Summer 2025!
