Engaging the Recreational Fishing Community in Plastic Pollution Prevention

In collaboration with the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH), Pollution Probe launched a new initiative to engage the Great Lakes fishing community in preventing and reducing plastic pollution.

This summer, we conducted a survey of recreational fishers across the region to better understand their experiences, concerns, and ideas related to plastic waste in local waterways. Shared through more than 90 fishing community groups and featured in Ontario OUT of DOORS magazine, the survey gathered perspectives and insight into pollution in local waterways and thoughts on potential prevention strategies. The responses are being used to help shape community-driven solutions across the Great Lakes region.

Pollution Probe partnered with conservation authorities, municipalities, marinas and community organizations to install 57 fishing line and cigarette butt recycling receptacles at popular fishing locations across Ontario based on findings from the survey. These new receptacles will make it easier for both the fishing and broader community to dispose of waste when out in the local environment.
