In November 2023, the federal government tabled Bill C-59 to fully establish a standalone Canada Water Agency (CWA), delivering on its commitment in the fall economic statement tabled in parliament on November 21, 2023. The CWA will foster collaboration in taking action to respond to the growing challenges threatening the health and sustainable management of freshwater ecosystems across Canada.
Pollution Probe has been a strong supporter and contributor to the creation of an independent CWA and recently supported the federal government in a line of inquiry related to interjurisdictional efforts to address floods, drought and freshwater pollution. The standalone CWA is a critical step towards a more holistic, whole-of-government approach to addressing freshwater challenges across the country, including through improved collaboration. We look forward to working with the CWA and partners on advancing collaborative solutions to key freshwater challenges.
