Pembina Institute – Wind Power Certificates
In November 2003, the Pembina Institute launched its Green Power
Certificates program, which offers Green Power certificates issued
by Vision Quest Windelectric, originating from its EcoLogo-certified
wind power facilities in Alberta. By October 2005, 300 residential
and about 40 commercial/industrial customers were participating
in the program. The price premium for residential participants is
2.7¢/kWh and 2.5¢/kWh for purchases over 200 MWh. Commercial
pricing is customized. In August 2004, the Pembina Institute re-branded
its program under the name Wind Power Certificates. In November
2005, the website was upgraded to include calculators that make
it easy to determine how much wind power you will need to purchase
for a wide range of aspects of your life — home, office, transportation,
an event or to give as a gift. www.pembina.org/wind_power.asp
Pembina Institute – 20,000 Wind-Powered PC Program
As a variation on its Green Power Certificates, Pembina started
offering Green Power certificates specifically for computers on
November 16, 2004. The certificates cost $16 for laptops for three
years and $39 for desktop computers. They are available to both
residential and corporate customers, with about 8,000 users participating
as of October 2005. www.pembina.org/wind/wind_power_computer.php
ENMAX – Greenmax Program
ENMAX is a utility owned by the City of Calgary. Approximately
22,000 residential and 200 commercial customers were participating
in ENMAX Energy's Greenmax program as of September 30, 2005. Calgary
Transit's C-Train light rail system is 100% powered by wind power
supplied through Greenmax. As of October 2005, the monthly price
premium for ENMAX's EcoLogo-certified Green Power product for residential
participants was $6.25 for 50% green power and $12.50 for 100% Green
Power. ENMAX also has a small and medium business offer at $15.00
for 50% and $30.00 for 100% Green Power. Pricing for large commercial/industrial
customers is customized. ENMAX offers its product throughout Alberta.

Canadian Hydro Developers – Green Certificates
Canadian Hydro Developers created a Renewable Energy Certificates
program to sell the environmental attributes of wind and small hydropower
facilities to both residential and corporate customers. Certificates
are offered in 1 MWh blocks at $20 per MWh. Commercial customers
are offered the certificates under contracts of differences. Canadian
Hydro also sells green certificates wholesale to a power retailer,
which sells to its customer base. The certificates are self-certified,
but all generation facilities are EcoLogo-certified.
