Ontario to Launch Cap-and-Trade System for Carbon Emissions


On the eve of the first climate change summit among Canada’s provincial and territorial leaders, the Government of Ontario announced plans to establish a cap-and-trade system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To expand emissions permit trading opportunities among companies, Ontario plans to link its system to those that already exist in Quebec and California. Although the details of Ontario’s system remain to be seen, the move indicates that carbon emissions will now be treated as other forms of pollution and priced.
