A
FRESHWATER AND MARINE COASTAL
INTERNATIONAL EVENT
On June 23-28, 2002, over 400 participants from 35
countries joined together at the
“Managing Shared Waters” (MSW) Conference, in the North American Great
Lakes Basin, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, to exchange ideas and refine
their strategies for the sustainable development of freshwater and marine
coastal areas. The MANAGING SHARED WATERS initiative provided the
international community with a contemporary assessment of the capacity needs
of those working towards the sustainable development of coastal zones, with a
special focus on transboundary situations.
Conference
Outcomes
The
Conference Statement
charts a path forward for Pollution Probe and its partners.
It was presented at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in
Johannesburg, South Africa in September 2002 and will be a point of departure
and for additional work on water and capacity building that will take place at
the 3rd World Water Forum in Japan.
The
Conference Report presents a summary of the insights, expertise
and experience shared at the conference.
The
Resource Kit
includes a set of practical tools and approaches that coastal stakeholders can
use in their coastal regions. And
they are available for FREE!
NEXT STEPS
Starting
with the capacity building framework used at our conference, the MSW Team
continues to focus on implementing the recommendations outlined at the
conference. We are developing
concepts and ideas to continue on this path by focusing on capacity needs in
coastal areas particularly in transboundary situations;
stimulating an examination of current institutions and mechanisms to
encourage new stakeholder partnership approach in the Great Lakes Basin;
finding ways in which to offer our Great Lakes coastal expertise to others who
can benefit by it in parts of the world.
Stay tuned to our website for updates!
The
Coastal Zone Canada Association and Pollution Probe are presenting a 90 minute
session for MSW at the IAGLR/ILEC 2003 conference to be held in Chicago June
22 to 26, 2003 - exactly one year after MSW! For more information see
