Making TRACKS at Trent University

The Trent Aboriginal Cultural Knowledge and Science (TRACKS) Program is a youth initiative run by Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, and its surrounding Indigenous communities. TRACKS aims “to help youth understand environmental issues from multiple perspectives by delivering hands-on activities based in traditional and contemporary Indigenous knowledge systems, Western science disciplines, and environmental education.” The program recently received funding from both the United Way and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), specifically being recognized for its innovative approach to “furthering the conversation about Indigenous knowledge as a science, and culturally responsive education as a strategy to engaging young people.”
